  • Dr. Lyle Melenka graduated from medical school in 1981. From there, he specialized in Internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine; later obtaining his Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Epidemiology. He takes pride in having completed his education locally, at the prestigious University of Alberta, and has been a practicing Respirologist for the past 25 years.

    Dr. Melenka’s work is recognized in countless publications and research projects. Dr. Melenka stays at the forefront of the pulmonary field by his involvement in various research projects, clinical trials, teaching conferences and occupational health programs.

    Dr. Melenka founded Synergy Respiratory & Cardiac Care (Sherwood Park) in 2011, Total Respiratory Care (Fort McMurray) in 2016 and Complete Respiratory Care (West Edmonton) in 2017, which offer a full array of respiratory and cardiac testing as well as occupational health and wellness programs.

  • Dr. Fadi Khadour is a world-class specialist in cardiovascular medicine. He completed medical school and obtained his Master of Science in Pharmacology degree overseas at the University of Baghdad where he was awarded the University of Baghdad Prize and British Council Prize, Baghdad, in 1987 for ranking 3rd amongst medical college graduates.

    After relocating to Alberta, he completed his PhD at the University of Alberta in 1999. Dr. Khadour has studied, practised, and taught at the University of Alberta. Dr. Khadour has given several lectures in general pharmacology, pharmacology & dynamics, cardiovascular pharmacology and therapeutics. Among Dr. Khadour’s many achievements, he has headed several research publications and presentations.

    Dr. Khadour currently practices out of the Sturgeon Hospital and sees patients twice weekly at Synergy Respiratory and Cardiac Care.

    Dr. Khadour is certified as a Diplomate of the American Board for Cardiovascular Disease, as well as by the National Board of Echocardiography and the College of Physicians and Surgeons.

  • Dr. Taher is a certified specialist in cardiovascular medicine. He received his training at the University of Alberta and currently holds several portfolios, including: Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at the University of Alberta, Director of the Chest Pain Program at the Grey Nuns Hospital (GNH) and Director of Cardiology Residency training at GNH.  

    He has clinical appointment and is an active clinical staff member at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute and covers the Coronary Care Unit at GNH.

    Dr Taher has been recognized in various research publications including sentinel works on Aborted Myocardial Infarction.

  • Dr. Naseem is currently providing consultation as a practising Occupational and Environmental Medicine specialist in Alberta. He completed his residency training in the specialty of occupational medicine at the University of Alberta. Here, he was awarded the Fellow of The Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

    Dr. Naseem initially completed his three years postgraduate training in general surgery, following his MD. He obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health with distinction in 1989 and served as the Chief Medical Officer of Health for 8 years.

    In 1999, he completed his specialty training in Planning and Environment Preservation in Hiroshima, Japan. In 2004, Dr. Naseem obtained his Master’s Degree in Epidemiology from the University of Calgary, Alberta.

    Dr. Naseem is passionate about workforce health in Canada. He is experienced in developing surveillance programs for the industry aimed at monitoring workers’ health. Dr. Naseem is engaged in various research projects and programs related to workers’ health at an international level. He currently provides consultation on occupational medicine related services in Alberta.

Dr. Paige Lacy

  • Dr. Paige Lacy graduated with a PhD in Cell Physiology in 1992 from the Wellington School of Medicine, University of Otago, New Zealand. She obtained competitive salary awards and grants from The Wellcome Trust, the Parker B. Francis Fellowship Program, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to work at the University College London, UK in collaboration with the National Heart & Lung Institute, UK, and to establish her current research interests at the University of Alberta. She is currently Professor of Medicine and the Alberta Respiratory Centre (ARC) Research Director and is cross-appointed to the Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology. She is an expert in inflammation and immunology in airway diseases and is focused on the application of her scientific research findings to the improvement of health outcomes in occupational health.

    Dr. Lacy has over a hundred publications in peer-reviewed journals and books and is an active teacher in courses on inflammation and the immune system in relation to lung health. In collaboration with Dr. Lyle Melenka and his colleagues at the Synergy Cardiac & Respiratory Care, she is helping to determine the risks of exposure of insulators to potentially hazardous respirable materials such as silica, asbestos, and other substances in the work environment. This analysis will reveal if there is an increased risk of occupational asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and lung cancer in these individuals.
